Adviser on Arts and Culture

The Royal Norwegian Consulate General in New York is recruiting an Adviser on Arts and Culture for the Consulate’s Team on Culture, Business and Communication.

Promotion of Norwegian culture and business are core tasks of the Norwegian Consulate General in New York. The Consulate continues to build on the growing interest for Norwegian arts and culture, including design and architecture in the United States. The U.S. is an important export market for Norway, and the Consulate General seeks to further strengthen economic ties between the U.S. and Norway, particularly in sustainable solutions and green growth, as well as in culture. Established in 1906, the Consulate General in New York is the largest and oldest Norwegian Consulate General in the U.S.

The Consulate is currently looking for a new member for its Culture, Business and Communication team. The successful candidate will contribute to intensified efforts to promote Norwegian culture in NYC and work to strengthen the ties between Norway and the US in the field of arts and culture, thereby helping Norwegian artists succeed internationally by gaining access to key arenas abroad and reaching wider audiences. The Consulate General cooperates closely with the seven Norwegian Arts Abroad organizations: Music Norway, Office for Contemporary Art Norway (OCA), Norwegian Crafts, Norwegian Literature Abroad (NORLA), Performing Arts Hub Norway (PAHN), Design and Architecture Norway (DOGA) and the Norwegian Film Institute.

The successful candidate will have a strong command of one or several culture fields and have a wide and relevant network. The candidate will work closely with another adviser on arts and culture, responsible for literature, music and architecture.

The position’s responsibilities include:

  • Spearheading the Consulate´s projects within the fields of contemporary art, performance, film and craft to create new opportunities and increased visibility for Norwegian and Norway-based artists and institutions
  • Close dialogue with key organizations in Norway, such as the Office for Contemporary Art Norway, Performing Arts Hub Norway, Norwegian Film Institute and Norwegian Crafts
  • Continuous contact with leading museums, biennials and festivals in Norway and New York
  • Managing the Consulate´s international visitor programs for curators, art professionals and press
  • Grant management and administration (processing applications, drafting agreements, and reporting) and budget tracking
  • Event planning and implementation
  • Responsibilities and duties can be changed
We are looking for candidates with the following qualifications:
  • Relevant work experience in one or more of the above-mentioned subject areas, preferably contemporary art
  • Experience managing international art projects
  • Experience working with local and Norwegian art institutions is desired
  • Good social media skills
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language, both written and oral. Knowledge of Norwegian language is desired
  • Relevant higher education in a cultural field

  • Excellent administrative and budgetary skills
  • Good social and networking skills
  • Must enjoy a hectic, varied and social workday with frequent evening engagements
  • Ability to work in teams and to initiate independent projects
  • Good cooperation and communication skills and experience from promoting a healthy and inclusive work environment

Other:

You must hold a valid residence and work permit upon employment. If you are not a U.S. citizen or have a Green Card. The consulate is not able to sponsor a visa. Applications without information about residence status will not be considered.

  • Salary: Between 75 600 – 96 000 USD annual, depending on qualifications and previous experience.
